However well an amigurumi is crocheted, the result is only as good as the yarn. With baby toys especially, the choice of fibre decides both the feel and the safety. Here's a short guide.
Cotton or acrylic?
For baby amigurumi, cotton wins by a mile. It breathes, it's soft, it doesn't overheat and it keeps its shape after washing. Acrylic is cheap and vivid but pills over time, holds static and can irritate some skin. We choose cotton.
How natural is the cotton?
Because cotton is a natural fibre, it is skin-friendly, breathable and easy to wash. For something a baby touches — or might put in their mouth — it helps to know what the material actually is, so do not hesitate to ask your maker which yarn they use.
Colour and dye
For vivid but safe colours, look for yarn with fast, non-fading dye. Steer clear of yarn that leaves colour on a damp cloth.
How can you tell?
The simplest way is to ask: can the seller tell you the fibre and how it was made? We crochet with soft cotton yarn and always share what a piece is made from — because knowing what your baby touches is only fair.
